I Spy 96 Little Things

The finished quilt top:

I Spy 96 Little Things

Decided to go without borders.  It’s a good size for a child right now at approximately  48″ x 66″, and there’s nothing in my stash that works with this quilt top.

Backing will be Kona Pepper and some scraps of the Bottled Rainbows FQ bundle that I used for the sashing.

A little more info about this top can be found in this blog post.

a finish and a start

Sometime a little after the first of June, I finished “Flannel Rail Fence”, and I absolutely love it!

Started in 2005, seven years in the making and five moves later, it’s finally finished.  Constructed entirely from flannel from JoAnn’s and a cotton batting it makes for a warm little quilt.  The rail fence is a great pattern for new quilters and was the second pattern that I attempted.  There are minimal seams to match and it’s easy to strip piece.   The quilting was my first attempt ant free motion on a large piece and was much harder than all the little samples that I had done previously.  The curves aren’t very smooth, but a quick wash helped hide the irregularities.  I’m pretty pleased with it, just wish it was a tad bit bigger! It measures 39″ x 72″.

Quilting done!

I also started a new quilt earlier this week.  I didn’t feel like working on any of WIPs, and before I realized what I was doing, I was picking out I-spy charms for a new quilt.  I’ve loved Bottled Rainbows from Stitched in Color for quite a while, so the last time I ordered from Marmalade Fabrics, a Bottled Rainbows FQ bundle found it’s way into my cart.  I’ve also been admiring this I-Spy quilt by katie @ swim, bike, quilt! on Flickr.  I dutifully sketched out a layout based on it, but my quilt never progressed beyond the planning stages until the pattern was released through the Moda Bakeshop as I Spy Ten Little Things.  (You can probably see where this is going…)  I married the two inspirations and used the Bottle Rainbows layout for the sashing around each grouping of six I Spy charms from I Spy Ten Little Things.  It’s coming together fairly quickly, so I don’t feel guilty.  At this point, I only need to sew the four rows of blocks together and decide whether or not it needs a border.

I really like this concept of WIP Wednesday. It’s a nice little summary of the week.

Worked on this week:
  • Flannel Rail Fence – My first large free motion quilting project on my little Kenmore.  This looked so good in my head, but my quilting leaves much to be desired.  My make-shift extension table for my sewing machine wasn’t great (three iris scrapbooking cases that were arranged strategically around my machine and taped to my kitchen table to keep them in place), but I can’t imagine trying to quilt this without them.   I free motion quilted some wavy lines through the purple and dark green blocks to give it a bit of motion. (Tried the walking foot first, but it was terrible. The stitches were short because the quilt was way too heavy to feed well and difficult to maneuver through the curves. FMQ was much easier in this case. I left the stitching by the walking foot; I wasn’t going to waste any time ripping it out. Hopefully all of it will look better once the quilt has been washed.)  Depending on which fabrics that I focus on when I look at it, I either see pinwheels or apple cores.

  • Retro Flowers – Finished cutting the background fabric this week.  I decided to use Kona Maize after much deliberation.  I really like Pepper, but since this will be for a little girl, I think Maize is a better fit. Like Happy Go Lizzie mentioned on Flickr, the light color gives it more of a retro feel too.

  • Freebird Picnic – I cut 10 more Freebird fat quarters down into squares and rectangles.  I think I have about 10 more FQs to cut plus all of the background fabric.

2012 Finish-A-Long

I’ve been participating in a quilt finish-a-long on Ravelry, but I stumbled across another one in blog land hosted by Quilter in the Gap. I love that it’s inclusive of all my hobbies!  To participate, one must list her UFOs (unfinished objects), link her list at beginning of the quarter, and then link her finishes at the end of the quarter.  So without further ado, here are my projects for the second quarter of 2012.  (Yes, my list is rather ambitious, but I’d rather list everything than be deterred from working on a project because it’s not eligible.)

QUILTING UFOs:

  1. Flannel Rail Fence: Top is assembled, backing is ready, and binding has been prepped. Needs to be quilted. Measures 40″x74″.
  2. Chain of Friends Quilt: Block exchange on Ravelry using the Chain of Friends pattern by Kara J.  Top is assembled, backing is ready, and binding has been prepped. Needs to be quilted. measures 63.5″ x 84″.
  3. Red, White, & Bold:  Quilt along with Happycrafter207 but I ended up doing my own thing…  added solid squares, an inner border, and a larger outer border to make the finished quilt large enough for a twin bed.   Started Summer 2011. Needs quilting and binding. Measures 59″ x 82″.
  4.  Jelly Roll Race in Batiks: Started March 13, 2012. Needs to be quilted and bound. Have binding fabric, but it has not been cut.
  5. Cotton Candy Disappearing Nine Patch: Needs back and quilting, binding has been prepped. Pieced in a day from a bundle of fabric that I was going to sell. It worked out perfectly for this little quilt! Measures about 39″ x 52″. Planning to piece the back from the leftovers from the top and some baby blue kona cotton.
  6. 9 to 4 (aka Disappearing Nine Patch) in Batiks: Needs piecing, borders, backing, quilting, and binding.
  7. Batik Bargello: Fabric strips are sewn together and ready to have the bargello strips cut.
  8. Fat Quarter Stars: Quilt-a-long with Moose on the Porch Quilts started on Jan. 7, 2012. Using Tula Pink’s Prince Charming in the Honey and Indigo colorways and some solids.
  9. Random Reflections in Half Moon Modern: All the fabric has been cut for the top. Well, I cheated and used a jelly roll of HMM, but I had to cut the white yardage into 2.5″ strips.
  10. Retro Flowers: Quilt-a-long with Bianca of sweet diesel designs and Megan of City Stitches.  Have started cutting fabric, and that’s it for progress on this one.
  11. Freebird Picnic:  Needs cutting, piecing, backing, quilting, and binding.  Pattern is Picnic from Scrap Basket Sensations. I was SO excited about this at the beginning of the 2012, but I haven’t worked on it yet! What’s up with that?  Does anyone have scraps or yardage of Momo’s Freebird for Moda that they would like to sell? Please contact me if you do!

  2. Knitting Project Bag #2: Started January 2012.  Pattern is from Crazy Lanea.  All the pieces are cut and some sewing done.

  1. Cotton-Busting Bath Mat #2Just need to weave in the ends.
  2. Smitten Amalgam Socks:  First sock is done.  Working on the arch increases for the second.
